Though still a Vaganova student, Zhiganshina already has a coveted place on the Mariinsky Ballet roster. Yuri Fateyev can spot talent. Walking into the Vaganova Ballet Academy some three years ago to scout its best students, one girl in particular stood out among her peers. She was exceptional in her technique, style and comportment.
I also find it really interesting that she didn’t start her training at VBA. She auditioned as a 10 year old with all the other girls, but wasn’t accepted. Probably because not only is it obviously very difficult to get in as a 10 year old, but she’s not quite as tall with hyperextension like the “ideal” candidate. I believe she went to a private ballet school in St.Petersburg until she was about 14, and was then accepted to the school. She’s obviously having quite a bit of success, and I hope she changes the stereotype of Vaganova students all being exactly the same, and that not being a “perfect” student as a child doesn’t mean a dancer won’t get anywhere!
(By the way, please correct me if any of this is wrong, and go ahead and delete my little essay if you don’t want it on your blog.)
